It's very important to keep in mind at all times that our walk today is a spiritual practice of "Peace in Oneself; Peace in the World". Basically, the practice is to bring the mind home to the present moment by fully experiencing the suchness of the here and the now. Since we are walking, we pay special attention to the act of walking. We find Peace in Every Step.
Mindful Walking
We will be walking through the city. There will be traffic, pedestrians, bicycles, stoplights and crosswalks. As we walk, we will be challenged to remain present with each step and each breath while at the same time maintaining mindful awareness of the environment. Just use everything in the environment as an object of mindfulness. See and hear and feel that there are cars, pedestrians, shops, music, clouds, sun, wind. Be with the suchness of the moment as it presents itself. Come home to that again and again.
In addition to the gathas (practice poems) that Thay cites in the link above, you could also try:
"This is my left foor; this is my right foot." or simply "left; right" or "stepping; stepping"
Peaceful Walking
As we walk, you may have emotional feelings and thoughts during the walk and about the walk. For example, you may be angry about war or angry that you are being asked to walk so slowly, or get frustrated with your mind as it wanders from the present moment, or have an emotional reaction as a motorist shouts an unkind comment.
As thoughts and feelings arise, see that they are there, acknowledge them and then return to your mindfulness of walking. Let this moment and this step be sufficient or even wonderful.
Don't be too serious or solemn. Enjoy the peacefulness of walking in this way. Let a light smile play upon your lips. Mindful walking does require concentration, but it should also be enjoyable, not a chore.
You might like to acknowledge your neighbor as you pass with a kind smile or by bowing gently with your hands in prayer position in front of the heart.
When walking along the Promenade and the Beach front, you might like to hold hands with a friend. Be mindful that you don't block the passage of other pedestrians.
Safe Walking
It's important to remember that we are sharing the Walk with other pedestrians and motorists.
Please walk single file along the sidewalk so that other pedestrians can pass. Please be careful to not obstruct the passage of others. This includes allowing others to cross your path to obtain access to shops or the street. Remember to be courteous and kind, demonstrating loving kindness and peace of heart at all times.
In the highly unlikely event that you are confronted by an angry person, you might choose to bow to that person and thank him or her for their concern, acknowledging them and continuing your walk.
Please be mindful and careful at crosswalks. There is no hurry; "no where to go, nothing to do". Give yourself enough time to cross the street at a mindful, peaceful pace. If that means waiting for the next signal, then wait mindfully, feeling your feet on the ground, aware of the breath, observing the environment and smiling and bowing to your neighbor. When you cross, don't scurry. Take yourself to the other side peacefully.
